M/V Isabelle has been a passenger ship since its construction and has taken passengers to several ports in the Baltic Sea. However, the new winds directed the ship to Canada to offer accommodation instead.

Isabelle was about to become a floating hotel - a floatel - through a total transformation. The ship underwent a thorough repair, several rooms got a new purpose. Therefore, it was also necessary to redesign the entire ship's signage and wayfinding system.

Planning and preparing

All existing signs, from deck 2 to deck 11, were given a number or "remove" label. Photos were taken of each sign and all numbered signs were inserted into the Excel table. In this process, measurements and future materials were also marked. When the quantities and materials were sorted out, it was time to ask for quotes from different printing houses.

Creating a design system

Next, the colors and fonts to be used in the designs were determined. Many signs did not need a completely new design because old files could be used and those only needed the change of colors and fonts and renaming the rooms.

Although the existing files made the work somewhat easier, there were still countless changes to be made.

Designing

When designing the signs, I used Adobe Illustrator and its effective functions, so that the design of hundreds of different signs was more easy and effective.
